Gangsta, one of the best anime of 2015, takes a departure from the typical cutesy and shonen anime. The story follows Worick Archangelo and Nicolas Brown, known as the “Handymen,” who take on odd jobs in the closed town of Ergastulum, assumed to be in Eastern Europe.

What sets Gangsta apart is the unique portrayal of its main characters. Worick, with his lost left eye, and Nicolas, who is deaf and communicates through sign language, bring a refreshing twist to the narrative. The anime masterfully captures the voice acting of Nicolas, accurately reflecting the nuances of a deaf person’s speech.

The story kicks off with the Handymen taking on a job to eliminate a mafia outfit that defies the town’s rules. Along the way, they rescue a prostitute named Alex Benedetto, who becomes their secretary and our guide to understanding this gritty world.

In this world, a civil war has led to the creation of a drug called Celebre, which enhances human abilities but has deadly side effects. The drug’s effects are genetically passed down, resulting in a new breed of humans called “Tags” or “Twilights.” Twilights, like Nicolas, face discrimination and are only cared for by the mafia due to their powers.

Gangsta intricately weaves the history and dynamics of Worick and Nicolas’ relationship, highlighting the complexities of their bond. Worick, despite considering Nicolas a friend, is reminded by others that he is the contract holder, and Nicolas is bound to him by this context. Their past reveals the painful truth of Nicolas being seen as nothing more than a weapon.

The anime also introduces a ranking system for Twilights, adding another layer of intrigue to the plot. As the story progresses, it delves into a conspiracy of Twilight murders, a mafia war, and the emergence of the Destroyers, a group of Twilight hunters.

With its superb animation quality and intense sword fighting scenes, Gangsta is a true gem. The anime holds nothing back in its portrayal of violence and showcases a phenomenal cast of characters, each harboring secrets and motives.

Don’t miss out on this badass show, rated a solid 9/10!
