Dragon Ball Z Super Episode 65: A Thrilling Battle Against Fused Zamasu
Slight spoiler alert! Make sure to catch up on the latest episode before reading on! This review is based on the dub version of Super currently airing on Toonami.
We are now in the midst of the Future Trunks Saga, with Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks facing off against the formidable Fused Zamasu. Following the fusion of Black and Zamasu from the previous episode, the newly formed god embarks on a destructive rampage, executing his Zero Mortals plan. Gowasu and Supreme Kai theorize that Fused Zamasu, possessing the relentless fighting power of a Saiyan (Goku Black) and the divine energy of a Kai (Future Zamasu), is one of the most powerful beings in existence, with an unlimited source of power at his disposal. Our heroes find themselves in a desperate battle to save the already fragile future.
Vegeta instructs Future Trunks to escort Bulma and Future Mai to safety while he and Goku confront Fused Zamasu head-on. Meanwhile, Gowasu and Supreme Kai also make their escape, as Fused Zamasu launches a series of deadly attacks. Goku and Vegeta barely survive the relentless onslaught, but unfortunately, many of the survivors living underground are not as fortunate.
Underground, Future Yajirobe and the remaining survivors are forced out of their shelter by the sheer force of Fused Zamasu’s attacks on the surface. Some survivors manage to escape ahead of Yajirobe, Haru, and Maki, only to be instantly vaporized by one of Fused Zamasu’s devastating attacks. Paralyzed with fear, the rest of the survivors appeal for someone to venture outside and assess the situation. Yajirobe bravely volunteers, and just as Goku and Vegeta launch a counterattack against Fused Zamasu, he beckons the others to follow him. Eventually, they reunite with Future Trunks, who directs them to Bulma’s tech garage on a hill.
Goku and Vegeta put up a valiant fight against Fused Zamasu, but their efforts fall short, resulting in both heroes being overpowered. Suddenly, Future Trunks appears and enters his newly acquired Super Saiyan Rage mode, joining the battle. Fused Zamasu prepares to annihilate all three heroes with his Holy Judgement attack, but Future Trunks counters with a Super Galick Gun, holding Fused Zamasu’s attack at bay. Vegeta then joins in, launching a Super Galick Gun of his own alongside Future Trunks, redirecting the Holy Judgement back towards Fused Zamasu. However, due to Fused Zamasu’s immortality, the counterattack proves futile and only serves to further infuriate the god. Fused Zamasu retaliates with a Lightning Of Absolution aimed directly at Future Trunks, but Vegeta bravely intervenes, taking the full force of the attack. Undeterred, Fused Zamasu unleashes another Holy Judgement upon the father-son duo, but Goku enters the fray and counters the attack with a God Kamehameha, resulting in a fierce clash between the two forces. The episode concludes with this intense cliffhanger moment!
As evident from the thrilling events described above, this episode delivers a captivating experience. It harkens back to the excitement of the later episodes of Dragon Ball Z, particularly the epic battles against Cell and Kid Buu. Fused Zamasu proves to be one of the most formidable villains in Super, perhaps even the only one to truly test our heroes. The action is intense and imaginative, paying homage to the iconic father-son moment between Goku and Gohan during the Cell saga, but this time featuring Vegeta and Future Trunks. The English voice acting, as always, is outstanding, with the core cast of Goku, Vegeta, Bulma, Supreme Kai, Future Trunks, and Future Mai delivering stellar performances. Fused Zamasu retains his monologue-heavy villainous nature, but his fused voice, combining elements of Black and Zamasu, adds a substantial weight to his dialogue.
The only aspect that could benefit from some restraint is the side plot involving Yajirobe and the other survivors. Limiting their scenes to a few brief moments showing them fleeing the city or surprisingly appearing at Bulma’s garage would have sufficed, rather than dedicating a good five minutes of focus away from the main battle between Fused Zamasu, Goku, and Vegeta. Recent choices like this in Super somewhat diminish the excitement compared to the approach taken in Dragon Ball, Z, and GT. Nevertheless, Super still shines and intensifies in its dramatic intensity as we near the climax of the Future Trunks Saga.
