But first, let’s start with an introduction to the series.

Introducing Mieruko Chan

Mieruko Chan, also known as “The Girl Who Can See Them,” is a Japanese manga series created by Tomoki Izumi. The manga was published by Kadokawa Shoten on November 2, 2018, and is still ongoing. So far, the manga series has been collected into 6 tankobon volumes. An anime series based on the manga was released on October 3, 2021, and concluded on December 19, 2021. Despite being a short anime series, it gained a large fan following and remained one of the best anime series of Autumn 2021.

Who Are The Shrine Spirits in Mieruko Chan?

As mentioned earlier, the Shrine Spirits play a crucial role in the ending of the series. However, they also play a significant role throughout the entire series. Shrine Spirits are pairs of identical spirits that originate from the Shrines. After Miko Yotsuya, the protagonist of the series, forms a pact with them, the Shrine Spirits are obligated to protect her from other spirits who are aware of Miko’s ability to see them. They have a ghostly appearance with an ominous aura. Both spirits are identical and have short hair with foxy ears. Their facial features have not been prominently shown in the series. They have a vaguely feline nose, darkened slits for eyes, and a sharp-toothed mouth. These spirits are very short, barely reaching Miko’s shoulder.

These Shrine Spirits are obedient to those who pray at the shrines and even offer help to those who ask for it. However, they expect payment in return for their assistance. In Miko’s case, they took her soul as payment in order to protect her from other spirits. One of their most noticeable features is their ruthlessness. They are generally aggressive towards their opponents and attack instantly when they sense danger. Throughout the series, we witness Shrine Spirits fighting against spirits that are much larger than them. Despite their small stature, they are capable of dismembering even the largest of spirits. Their most common attack involves launching an invisible blast by facing their palms towards their opponents.

Do Shrine Spirits Harm Miko?

This pair of identical spirits are naturally aggressive and fierce towards their opponents. However, according to their pact with Miko, they are bound to protect her. For a normal person to have spirits around them might seem related to witchcraft, and it can be horrifying. But the Shrine Spirits have pledged to protect Miko at any cost, even from the greatest dangers. So, can they really harm her when we have seen them standing alongside Miko and her group when they were threatened by the God of the Mountain?

In the recent last episode of Mieruko Chan, something unexpected happened, contradicting the protective nature of the Shrine Spirits. While the series was reaching its conclusion, Miko decided to visit the shrine and thank the Shrine Spirits for their help and assistance. However, those spirits did not seem very happy to see her and tried to attack her. The fear became tangible. The protectors themselves were seemingly trying to harm Miko. Fortunately, it was just a nightmare. Miko woke up horrified by the scene and found herself safe in her own room. This proves that the Shrine Spirits never intended to harm her and have always protected Miko and her friends.
