Times are tough for Yato, the minor god of calamity who takes center stage in the captivating series Noragami Aragoto. He may be broke, but Yato’s got his posse – Yukine, the lost soul of a teenager who serves as his Regalia, and Hiyori, a high school student with the supernatural ability to leave her physical body.

A Darker and More Violent Journey

In the sequel’s first arc, viewers unravel a murderous episode from Yato’s past, explaining the ongoing enmity between him and Bishamon, the “god of war.” The story takes a darker turn, delving into Yato’s powerful war god days. Yukine, meanwhile, bonds with Suzuha, a neglected Regalia who understands the fear of being forgotten. This connection is used by the sinister Kugaha to manipulate Yato and Bishamon, leading to a battle that forces enemies to become allies.

Ebisu and the Underworld

In the second story, Yato encounters Ebisu, the elegant and disillusioned god of good fortune. Disguised in an Italian suit, Ebisu is far from the jolly figure usually depicted in Japanese Buddhist tradition. He dabbles in forbidden dark arts, commanding monstrous phantoms. As the story progresses, Yato finds himself in the clutches of Izanami, the Queen of the Underworld, prompting his friends and former enemies to unite and save him.

Unlocking Yato’s True Name

To save Yato, Yukine must utter his true name, a challenge complicated by the Japanese language’s complexity. Hiyori realizes a crucial mistake in how she has been reading Yato’s name, leading her to discover his hidden identity. By calling his true name, Yato escapes Izanami and returns to the human world.

With the help of his friends, Yato finally has the chance to shape the future he desires – one where he’s a beloved god who brings happiness by granting wishes. Despite his past, Yato remains a likable and engaging character, thanks to the exceptional voice acting of Jason Liebrecht, who infuses the role with warmth and charisma. The strong bond between Yato, Yukine, and Hiyori keeps Noragami Aragoto appealing, even during its darker moments.
