P.A. Works, the renowned anime studio, has just announced that they are producing a second season of the beloved anime series, The Eccentric Family (Uchōten Kazoku). Fans of the original series can rejoice as their favorite tanuki and tengu characters return for more unforgettable adventures in the magical city of Kyoto.

The Much-Awaited Sequel: Uchōten Kazoku 2

At the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair, P.A. Works took the stage to unveil their exciting new project. Titled Uchōten Kazoku 2 (The Eccentric Family 2), this season marks the studio’s first sequel series – creating even more anticipation among fans.

The announcement was made by key members of the production team, including renowned voice actor Takahiro Sakurai, talented voice actress Mamiko Noto, original novel author Tomihiko Morimi, director Masayuki Yoshihara, and P.A. Works CEO Kenji Horikawa.

Familiar Faces and Talented Creators

Fans will be delighted to know that the sequel retains the main staff members from the first season. Masayuki Yoshihara will be directing the series at P.A. Works, while Kōji Kumeta (known for Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei and Kakushigoto) will handle character design. Lantis will continue to produce the captivating music that accompanies the series.

Additionally, Kousuke Kawazura will adapt Kumeta’s designs for animation and serve as animation director, while Yūsuke Takeda and Harumi Okamoto will take charge as art directors.

The Beloved Cast Returns

The familiar voices of the Shimogamo family will be reprising their roles in Uchōten Kazoku 2. Fans can once again enjoy the talents of:

• Takahiro Sakurai as Yasaburō Shimogamo, the mischievous third son of the family
• Junichi Suwabe as Yaichirō Shimogamo, the responsible eldest son
• Hiroyuki Yoshino as Yajirō Shimogamo, the withdrawn second son
• Mai Nakahara as Yashirō Shimogamo, the adorable youngest son
• Mamiko Noto as Benten, the alluring and mysterious woman

An Enchanting Tale of Magic and Mystery

Set in the beautiful city of Kyoto, The Eccentric Family takes us on a journey where tanuki, tengu, and humans coexist. The story revolves around Yasaburō Shimogamo, a tanuki and the third son of the Shimogamo family, who live in the Tadasu no Mori forest near Shimogamo Shrine.

One fateful day, Yasaburō’s father falls victim to a group known as the “Friday Club” and is tragically devoured. As Yasaburō navigates his way through encounters with a wise old tengu, playful battles with other tanuki, and amusing interactions with a psychic human girl, he gradually uncovers the truth behind his father’s demise.

A Worthy Successor

The first season of The Eccentric Family received critical acclaim, winning the Excellence Award at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2013. Now, with the highly anticipated second season on the horizon, fans can expect an even more captivating and enchanting story.

Crunchyroll streamed the first season under the title The Eccentric Family, and NIS America released the series on Blu-ray Disc in January 2015.

A Dazzling World Created by Tomihiko Morimi

The Eccentric Family is based on Tomihiko Morimi’s original novel of the same name. Published by Gentosha in 2010, the novel quickly gained popularity and spawned a sequel titled Uchōten Kazoku Nidaime No Kicho in 2015. Morimi’s masterfully crafted narrative has sold over 360,000 copies and continues to captivate readers and viewers alike.

In addition to the anime announcement, it was revealed that Bandai Visual will be releasing a Blu-ray Disc box set for the first season in Japan.
