A Riveting Episode

In this episode of Fruits Basket 2019, we witness the show’s strengths shining through. It’s an emotionally charged episode that manages to captivate viewers while setting the stage for future plots. From the very beginning, we’re frustrated by the lack of communication as everyone seems content to let Tohru move out without expressing how they truly feel.

As the story unfolds, we are introduced to Tohru’s family, who initially appear pleasant but quickly reveal their true colors. Insults about Tohru’s remarkable mother only serve to fuel our anger, leaving us yearning for Tohru to stand up for herself. Just when we think all hope is lost, the surprising hero of the story, Tohru’s remarkable grandfather, steps in, proving himself to be one of the best minor characters.

Shortly thereafter, Yuki and Kyo, two of Tohru’s love interests, make an unexpected appearance to bring her back to the Soma household. This episode, seemingly about Tohru’s newfound place in the Soma household, manages to deliver drama, emotion, and further insight into our beloved characters.

A Curious Misstep

Although this episode is filled with praise-worthy moments, one scene in particular stands out as odd. The “rescue” scene, while meant to be comical, takes on a more troubling tone when viewed from an outsider’s perspective. Two strong and assertive men, Yuki and Kyo, appear out of nowhere in the middle of Tohru’s home. Kyo then proceeds to forcefully drag Tohru out the door, while Yuki knocks a family member to the ground. To an outside observer, it appears as though these men are kidnapping a young woman in broad daylight, which raises eyebrows, especially considering the accusations of Tohru being a live-in girlfriend at a man’s house. Despite the scene being played off as humorous, it leaves a lingering sense of discomfort.

A Promising Future

Despite this minor misstep, the episode remains thoroughly enjoyable and sets the stage for the exciting zodiac shenanigans that await us at the Soma house. As the foundation is built, we can look forward to more heartwarming and captivating moments in the episodes to come.
