The anime community is buzzing with excitement as it has been confirmed that the highly anticipated seventh season of the supernatural drama anime, ‘Natsume’s Book of Friends’, is finally happening! After six long years, fans can rejoice as the new season coincides with the anime’s 15th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, a new visual and promotional video have been unveiled.

The Return of Natsume’s Book of Friends

The 15th-anniversary promotional video gave fans a glimpse of what’s to come in the upcoming series, titled ‘Natsume Yūjin-Chō: Urushi’. Takahiro Ōmori will serve as the chief director, while Hideki Ito will return as the director for the new season. Sadayuki Murai will oversee the series composition, and Akira Takata will be responsible for the character design. Makoto Yoshimori will compose the music. Studio Shuka will handle the animation for the new season.

To commemorate the 15th anniversary, a dedicated website has also been launched. Voice actor Hiroshi Kamiya, who plays Takashi Natsume, and Kazuhiko Inoue, who plays Nyanko-sensei/Madara, have shared their congratulatory comments and dialogue on the website, expressing their gratitude and joy for the announcement.

Natsume’s Book of Friends: A Supernatural Journey

‘Natsume’s Book of Friends’ follows the everyday life of Takashi Natsume, a young boy with the rare ability to see spirits called Yōkais. Together with his self-proclaimed bodyguard, Nyanko-sensei, they embark on adventures, interacting with spirits and forming unbreakable bonds. The anime first aired in 2008 and continued until its sixth season in 2017. Now, after six years of anticipation, the title for the seventh season has been revealed as ‘Natsume Yūjin-Chō Urushi’.

Blu-ray Disc Box 3 Release

In addition to the new season announcement, fans can also look forward to the release of the Natsume Yūjin-Chō Blu-ray Disc Box 3. This box set will contain the fifth and sixth seasons, including a special edition with all 26 episodes. Priced at JPY$32,000, the box set will include bonus materials such as an original three-sided case, a Nyanko-sensei clear sticker, a booklet, and bonus footage of non-credit opening and ending scenes. The Blu-ray Disc Box 3 will be released on November 22, 2023.

About Natsume’s Book of Friends

‘Natsume Yūjin-Chō’ is a beloved Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yuki Midorikawa. First published in 2005, the series has since gained recognition for its unique storytelling and intricate artwork. The anime adaptation, produced by Brain’s Base, aired over five seasons from 2008 to 2016, followed by a sixth season produced by Shuka Animation in 2017. An anime film was also premiered in 2018. The series has been published in English as ‘Natsume’s Book of Friends’ by VIZ Media since January 5, 2010.

The story revolves around Takashi Natsume, an orphan with the extraordinary ability to see spirits known as Ayakashi or Yōkai.
