What We’re Watching this Winter

Amidst the influx of new series, there are a few beloved returns and some that leave us undecided. However, there are certain titles from the previous season, such as Urusei Yatsura, Blue Lock, and Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-Kun, that continue to captivate us. My Hero Academia and One Piece, legendary series in their own right, are also keeping us hooked without any breaks. Now, let’s dive into the returning series and explore which ones are living up to the hype!

Demelza

While I still enjoy Blue Lock, My Hero Academia, Urusei Yatsura, and To Your Eternity from last season, there is one series that I have been eagerly awaiting: DanMachi Season 4 Part 2. After a season off, it’s exciting to see Bell and Ryu back in action. The upcoming arc adapts one of my favorite books from the series, and with J.C. Staff at the helm, I can’t wait to see how it unfolds in anime form.

Putting DanMachi aside, the series that has me most excited this season is the return of Bungo Stray Dogs for Season 4. With a break between seasons, the uncertainty of its continuation was nerve-wracking. But fear not, as the series has triumphantly returned, adapting one of the light novels as a reintroduction before diving into the main story.

Season 2 gave us a glimpse into the history of Dazai, Sakanosuke, and Ango’s relationship, while Season 3 explored Dazai and Chuuya’s bond in the Port Mafia. This time, we delve into the origin story of Ranpo and Yukichi Fukuzawa, the president of the Armed Detective Agency. By uncovering their past, we gain a deeper understanding of the story’s foundation. The stylish animation from studio BONES, combined with the talented director Takuya Igarashi and chief animation director Nobuhiro Arai, makes Season 4 a treat for fans of Bungo Stray Dogs.

Another standout among the returning champions is In/Spectre, back for Season 2 after its originally planned 2022 release. The season kicks off with an anime original episode, reintroducing us to the dynamic duo, Kotoko Iwanaga and Kuro Sakuragawa. The series explores a new storyline involving a man saved by a Yuki-Onna, providing a fresh perspective on human-yokai interaction. As a fan of the manga, I know this arc will keep anime-only viewers engaged. Get ready for more mysteries and supernatural adventures!

Sarah

Tsurune is back with its new season, “The Linking Shot,” following the Kazemai High School kyudo team. After winning a place in the prefectural tournament, they face Kirisaki High, who nearly outperformed them in the regional tournament. This season focuses on the team members, their opponents, and the significance of kyudo in their lives. With its stunning animation by Kyoto Animation, Tsurune captures the essence of ancient archery, blending the present and the past seamlessly.

While the series takes its time reintroducing the main cast, Episode 3 marks the beginning of exciting developments. As the high schools compete in the regional tournament, Minato and his friends encounter a new team from Fujimine High, known for their unique archery style. This encounter sets the stage for a clash and rekindles old grudges. Tsurune excels in portraying the essence of kyudo and creating tension during the tournament. Keep an eye out for Minato’s internal struggles and unexpected advice from their coach, Masa. Tsurune is a must-watch for fans of Kyoto Animation’s visual style.

The Vampire Dies in No Time is a comedic series about the peculiar partnership between Draluc, a weak vampire, and Ronaldo, a famous vampire hunter. Set in Shin-Yokohama, where supernatural beings reside alongside supernatural eradication organizations, the series offers supernatural hijinks, occasional risqué humor, and the ever-adorable armadillo, John. Join them for laughs and absurdity!

As for Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-Kun, while its third season has been enjoyable, the Harvest Festival contest episodes have started to lose their spark. The writers have stretched the original manga material too thin, resulting in a slow-paced storyline. However, fear not! Play it Cool, Guys continues to entertain with the introduction of novelist Ishigami. Although each episode is only eleven minutes long, the unique art style and endearing moments of the not-so-cool guys make this slice-of-life series worth watching.

Onosume

As a fan of the first season, I was eagerly awaiting the return of BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense for the second season. In the opening episodes, Maple and her guild, Maple Tree, venture through new levels in the virtual reality MMO “New World Online.” However, the pacing feels rushed, with multiple levels introduced in only two episodes. I miss the exploration aspect that defined the previous season. Despite this, the locations and animation remain visually stunning. Hopefully, the series will focus more on the adventurous and humorous moments as it progresses.

Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro returns with more of Nagatoro’s mischievous antics directed towards her hapless Senpai. While the series had a controversial start, it has evolved into an interesting romantic comedy with funny and heartwarming moments. The second season aims to emphasize the wholesome aspects of their relationship, showcasing their growth as they visit the zoo together and learn to support each other. Although the teasing jokes may cater to specific preferences, there is still ample content to enjoy.

Cold Cobra

After the surprise success of Vinland Saga’s first season, fans have eagerly awaited Season 2. Studio MAPPA, known for their work on Attack on Titan, takes the reins for this season. The opening episode introduces a new character, Einar, who experiences the brutal reality of Viking history. As the story unfolds, we witness the contrasting paths taken by Einar and the protagonist, Thorfinn. The animation captures the atmospheric beauty of medieval Europe, while delivering the gritty violence inherent in the series. With the return of familiar characters and intriguing new storylines, Vinland Saga Season 2 promises to be an exhilarating experience.
