When it comes to comedy anime, Nichijou is the first name that comes to mind. It captured the hearts of fans when it first aired in 2011, leaving them yearning for a second season. But will it ever happen? Let’s dive into what you need to know.

About Nichijou

Nichijou is a manga series written and illustrated by Arawi Keiichi. It has been serialized since December 2006 in Kadokawa Shoten’s Shonen Ace. The manga, which consists of 10 volumes, was published from July 2007 to December 2015. After a six-year hiatus, Keiichi resumed the serialization in 2021.

Set in the fictional town of Tokisadame, Nichijou, which translates to “Ordinary Life,” revolves around the lives of three high school girls: Yuki Aioi, Mio Naganohara, and Mai Minakami. The story also follows the adventures of Nano Shinonome, an android created by a young Professor, and Sakamoto, a talking black cat.

Throughout the series, random and hilarious incidents occur, intertwining the lives of the characters. Additionally, there are vignettes unrelated to the main episodes, such as the “Like Love” vignettes featuring short love stories. Some of these vignettes have been adapted into a spin-off called Helvetica Standard by Keiichi.

The Production of Nichijou Anime

In 2010, it was announced in the July edition of Shonen Ace that Nichijou would be adapted into an anime series by Kyoto Animation or KyoAni, known for their works such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, Clannad, and K-On!. The series was directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, with Jukki Hanada as the series writer, and Futoshi Nishiya as the character designer. The main voice cast included:

Prior to the anime, an original video animation (OVA), Nichijou 0, was released in March 2011. The series aired in Japan on TV Aichi and was also simulcast on Crunchyroll.

Will There be Nichijou Season 2?

Nichijou was well-received by both fans and critics. According to MyAnimeList, the anime adaptation received a high rating of 8.46 out of 10 from more than 347,000 votes. However, despite its popularity, the chances of a second season are slim.

Unfortunately, we shouldn’t hold our breath for Nichijou Season 2. There are several reasons why the production company needs to carefully consider the possibility. One major factor is the initial low sales of the anime, which were heavily impacted by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake.

Furthermore, Keiichi only resumed the manga serialization in 2021 after a long six-year break. Neither Keiichi nor KyoAni has made any official announcements regarding a second season. It is worth noting that KyoAni suffered a tragic arson attack in 2019, resulting in the loss of 36 lives and causing several project delays, including Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll.

After overcoming the tragedy, KyoAni released Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S two years later. As the studio continues to recover, it is understandable that Nichijou Season 2 may have to wait until the right time.

Potential Story for Nichijou Season 2

Although there have been no concrete discussions about Nichijou Season 2, Keiichi has uploaded some short videos to his official YouTube channel, あらゐけいいち, in 2021. While some of the videos feature a high school girl named Amamiya-san, others are related to Nichijou. These videos might not confirm the production of a second season, but they provide hope that Keiichi is still working on some Nichijou goodness.

In the first season of Nichijou, Nano took the spotlight. The first half of the season explored Nano’s dream of becoming a high school student, despite being an android. However, she soon faced the fear of her true nature being exposed, especially by Kana Nakamura.

So, what can we expect from Nichijou Season 2? The first season covered the first five volumes of the manga, with five more volumes waiting to be adapted. Additionally, as the manga serialization is still ongoing, there is a possibility of Nichijou continuing for more than just two seasons. But for now, let’s not get our hopes up too high.
